Select a passage from Chapters 16 - 17. Read through this passage several times and comment on the language that Salinger uses. Rewrite this passage in a more formal way. After this, compare Salinger's passage and your own rewritten passage. Why does the language that Salinger chooses to use work in a book like "Catcher"?

This assignment must be typed, double spaced. It is a neccessary component for tomorrow's class discussion.

Holden's Generalizations

Holden's tendency to go over the particulars of an event and then draw conclusions about it is apparent throughout chapters 1 - 7.

Discuss one of Holden's following generalizations about life and decide to what degree they are true. Ask yourself if you would have drawn the same conclusions as Holden if you were in a similar situation.
