Passage Selection...

Discuss the language used by Salinger and question why it is different than the language used in other novels and in "polished" and "formal" writing.

Task:

Select a passage from Chapters 16 - 17. Read through this passage several times and comment on the language that Salinger uses. Rewrite this passage in a more formal way. After this, compare Salinger's passage and your own rewritten passage. Why does the language that Salinger chooses to use work in a book like "Catcher"?

This assignment must be typed, double spaced. It is a neccessary component for tomorrow's class discussion.

My suggestions:
  • Type the passage in word (have the page number as a reference).
  • Analyze the passage (this means ANNOTATE).
  • Rewrite the passage in a more formal tone.
  • Compare and contrast the similiarities and differences (a venn diagram would be handy).
  • Prepare a written statement (yes typed) that answers the questionWhy does the language that Salinger chooses to use work in a book like "Catcher"?
